2.User Scenario

<Jihyun(23), College Student>

Jihyun, a senior university student in Yonsei Univ, has lots in her mind now that she’s about to graduate. It is more so since she has been struggling to organize things to write on her resume. Looking back, she had done tons of stuff but most of them seems too fuzzy and unorganized in her head. She starts  out on the “Iceberg Service” and spends time browsing and searching the floors, watching clips she saved in each of floor. Then finally she settles on a floor where she stored her memory with her ex-boyfriend. They used to do extracurricular works together that can possibly be related to the position she’s applying for. She goes to floors which have videos of the time when she was with her ex, picking up few more activities she can write on her resume. Finally she can complete her resume with detailed description of her previous works.

<Mr.Kim(62) and Mrs.Kim(60)>

Mr.Kim and Mrs.Kim are a couple who has been married for 35 years. Since their son and daughter recently got married, Mr Kim and Mrs.Kim are spending lonely time at home. While Mr.Kim was watching  “슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다”, those little kids in the show reminded him of his son and daughters. Then, he starts out on the “Iceberg Service” with his wife, visiting 5th floor and spends time watching  a clip of his children’s childhood. Watching his son and daughter running around the playground was so vivid that they feel like they travelled back in time. Then, they visits 2nd floor to watch the moment of marriage proposal. Watching Mr.Kim’s proposal, Mrs.Kim teases him. They laugh at each other. Finally, they visits 3rd floor and watches the moment of their marriage. They couldn’t believe how time flew so fast. They talks about how they are lucky to have each other and wiped tears. Using “Iceberg Service”, they no longer spend boring time at home.

1. In-depth individual interview

Q. 평소 사진, 영상찍는 걸 좋아하는지?

Woobin:  Well, sort of. I think so.

Sehyun: I do. I enjoy taking photos and videos with my iphone. I don’t think there is single day that I didn’t take a photo ever since I got my first smartphone. I occasionally take photos with camera but about 99% of time I use my phone.

JongIm: Yeah. I do. I usually take photos than videos.

Seoyeon :  Yes, but not of my face nor of food I eat. I enjoy taking photos of others or of scenery. I usually take photos with my phone camera.

Gabe : Yeah. I like taking photos rather than taking videos.

Q. 찍은 사진/영상을 어떻게 보관, 정리하는지?

Woobin: I store them in my phone. I don’t categorize or sort them, but rather they are stacked in time. I erase photos when my phone is full. (What’s the criteria of erasing those?). Whether I look good or bad. (So you erase photos you look bad?) Yes.

Sehyun: Since I mostly take photos with my phone, I just leave it there as long as my storage allows. I don’t use any application to organize photos since it automatically does so by place and date. (What if your storage gets full?)  I move them to Naver Drive. It also sort photos and videos in similar way. I don’t specifically makes folders or try to organize in my own ways.

JongIm: I store photos in my phone or email. (How do you organize your photos?) I make folders in my phone. Currently I have about five folders. Having folders is great because I can quickly find whatever photos that I want to see. (What do you do if your storage gets full?) I send photos to my email and delete them.

Seoyeon : I occasionally load the photos on to my computer, and upload them up on Naver cloud(drive) or store them in hard drive after categorizing them into folders.

Gabee : I upload them onto my drive, I don’t particularly categorize them though.

Q. 다시 보게 되는 영상/사진은?

Woobin: I look up my photos of my heydays. (Why?) Because I look  so ugly now? (Can you explain more about it?) I feel motivation of being slim like my heyday.

Sehyun: I would say the ones that I took when I was traveling. (Why?) I haven’t travelled much so I just like the fact that I’ve been to places where I’ve never been to. So looking at photos and videos that I took while traveling makes me feel better.

JongIm: The photos that I am looking good. (anything else?) Photos with my family. I often see photos with family and reminisce about old days.

Seoyeon : Sometimes I look up food photos when I’m hungry, but mostly I look up photos I took with my friends and family.

Gabee : Photos I took with other people. While I don’t really look up my selfies, I occasionally look up the photos I took with other people, especially the ones where everyone looks happy.

Q. 절대 못지우는 영상/사진은?

Woobin: Photos of my young ages. When I was in high school. Cause I looked good back then. And photos I look good.

Sehyun: There is this video I took when me and my classmates were preparing a samba dance performance for school festival.

JongIm: Photos that I am looking good and family photos. It is pretty difficult to come out well in the photo. So, I often keep the photos that I am looking good. Also, I don’t erase family pictures because they are very precious.

Seoyeon: Photos where I look good, or photos I took with my family. Those photos I never erase them. I usually don’t delete photos though. It’s not like I regularly look up past photos, but I store them up on naver / google drive and don’t delete them.

Gabee: Photos I took with people. Also I would never delete photos I took while traveling, or participating in a festival. Because those kinds of experiences are hard to have second time.

Q. 소중한 영상/사진에서, 기억을 구성하는 것들

Woobin: My photo with my girlfriend, I took graduation photo with her. (Why is the photo valuable) Because it’s photo with my girlfriend…? (Can you explain the situation?) I took graduation profile pic and met my girl friend next to the library. Whether was not good. not much sound. There was fountain nearby, and people was walking by. (Anything else?) nothing. And my memories with my girlfriend and Lotte World. (What happened?) I played darts, I was sure I could hit the bullet but I failed to do so. (What else?) My memory of dating with my girlfriend at cafe at Gangnam. We draw each other’s face, and I drew better than her. (Is there any more memory other than memories of your girlfriend?) When I was army. I came back from a training, I was in the forest, next to a tent. Whether was gloomy, and it was fall, sound full of tanks. It was my most memorable training at army, that’s why.

Sehyun : The video is basically me and my friends dancing to funny music in shiny, sparkly dresses. It reminds me of the time we were practicing it after school for hours which was painful but fun at the same time. Watching the video actually brings me back to the time because whenever I watch the video with my friends in it, I can remember the time I use to spend most of my day with them. It also reminds me of the weather around that time by the way. It was freezing and we had to be in sleeveless dresses because we thought it was cute.

JongIm: The photo of my children. When they were young, they were the cutest kids. Every moment with them was very precious and unforgettable. Especially, I love the photo of three children wearing Indian traditional clothes. (Will you explain more?) One day, at the Lotte department store, there was an event booth where photographer takes photos of children with indian traditional clothes on. After dressing children, I made them sit calmly. They were like Indian kingdom family. Luckily, the photo  comes out very well and the photo is still hanged on the wall of my house.

Q.타임머신을 타고 과거의 5분을 다시 방문할 수 있다면 언제로? 그때의 기억 묘사.

Woobin: When I was young. I went picnic with my parents and nephews. Nephews were holding balloons, and I was feeding them pudding. Whether was real nice and warm. Grass smell. It was peaceful. I felt so happy back then.

Sehyun: I would like to go back to the time when I wasn’t born yet. (Why?) Because I don’t remember anything about it. (But isn’t there many other moments that you don’t/can’t remember?) That’s true, but the time I spent in my mom’s womb is like the thing that none of us can remember. I’d like to feel how it would be like to be in mom’s body. (Wouldn’t it feel similar if you soak in hot water?) But then I still have to feel like I’d drown to death or suffocate.

JongIm: I would like to go back to the time when I was getting married. At that time, I was very nervous so when I enter the wedding hall I walked really fast. (How?) I was supposed to walk with my dad, but I was walking too fast so I almost ahead of my dad. I hope I can go back to the past and have a chance to enter the wedding again.

Seoyeon: I would like to go back to when I was very little, like when I was in kindergarten. Back then I fancied an English teacher called Martin. I don”t really remember a lot about him, but I remember looking up to him and thinking about how tall he was. I just want to go back to that time and feel the moment.

Gabee : I would like to go back to the time when I was travelling with my friends and family. I really liked going from one place to another, hearing, seeing, tasting different things and in overall having a good time with precious people. Those days remain as good memories and I would like to go back to those times and re live the moments even just for a while.

  • Her photo gallery was mostly filled with photos of places and foods.
  • Photos of places : mostly photos of exhibitions she went, occasionally photos of her familiar places but with unfamiliar things (ex. a picture of bird she thought was weird on crosswalk to uni)
  • Photos of foods : since she mostly spend her time with her friends in restaurants and cafes, her food pics had her friends in it most of the time.

Iceberg Service

Time passes. Every good moments, whether we like it or not, are doomed to end. People we like to hang out with, places we like to visit, after few years we find them gone, or changed. We hold on to few special moments in our life by recording them with a camera, but photos and videos are not enough to give us a feeling of re-living the moments.

Our service – “Iceberg” , gives back such special moments and memories to people. By capturing a special moment with 360 degree camera, they can freeze that moment to last forever. With Iceberg and VR gears, people can jump into frozen time in their life and re-live that moment forever, meeting forgotten people, visiting places that no longer exists, so on.

The Iceberg is like a memory palace. To explain, when people put on VR gear, they will see themselves inside an elevator. This, we got idea from the movie Inception. In the movie, Cobb’s memories are stored in separate floors of the building, and the looker can move from one memory to another by using the elevator. Similarly, users of Iceberg will also designate, store their moments into certain floors. So when they want to revisit certain moment, they can press the button to the floor that contains that memory, and can literally ‘visit’ their memories.
Initial Idea of Iceberg is utilizing elevator, but if the service expands, maybe people can have personalized space of their own to store their memories. In that case, like a memory palace, people will be able to architect their own memory archive.

A VR system that lets travelers pre-experience the places they want before going on an actual travel. If the travelers enter their travel route, they can briefly experience the places using 360 VR system, like how much time it takes to go from certain place to another, what road to take to go to destined spot, etc. Also it would be more helpful to the tourists if the VR system let them see the state of hotel /inn beforehand, or if the VR can provide them with visual guide. By using this system, tour companies can minimize the dissatisfaction of customers, and tourists can have satisfying and safe tour experience without having to go through unnecessary troubles.
